
Disease of Rice & their Management
Rice Blast
- Disease resistant varieties or Tolerant varieties like Kanchan, Khumal-2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,13, machhapuchchhre-3, Parwanipur-1, janaki, Khajura-2, Radha-4,7,11,12,13, Hrdinath-1,2, Sukhha-1,2,3,4,5,6, Swarna sub-1 etc should be used.
- Use healthy seed only.Do not select seed from diseased field. Maintain wet nursery bed as far as possible.
- Do not apply urea fertilizer only but also apply phosphorus & Potassium in balanced amount.
- Avoid dense planting of Rice ie. 20 cm * 20 cm and plant only two seedling per hill. Maintain moisture level in the field.
- Maintain field sanitation by removing weeds from bunds and around field.
- Seed treatment with Carbendazim 50% WP @ 3 gram/kg seed is mandatory before nursery establishment.
- Spray Tricyclazole 75% WP @ 2 gram or Carbendazim 50% WP @ 1 gram or Kasugamycin 3% SL @ 1.5 ml/liter at 15 days interval for 2-3 times.
Brown Spot
- Plant disease resistant varieties.
- This disease prevails in fertilizer deficit condition so apply balanced fertilizer in the field.
- Hot water seed treatment: Treat the seed with hot water at 50-55 degree celsius for 10-12 minutes before sowing in nursery.
- Seed treatment with Carbendazim 50 WP or Bavistin or Derosal @ 2-3 gram/kg seed before sowing in nursery.
- Spray Mancozeb 75% WP @ 3 gram/liter water or Propineb 70 WP @ 3 gram/liter at 15 days interval for 3 times.
Sheath Blight
- Do not apply urea fertilizer only but also apply phosphorus & Potassium in balanced amount.
- Avoid dense planting.
- Spray Validamycin 3 L @ 3 ml/liter water or Pencycuron 23% SC @ 1.5 ml/liter or Carbendazim 50 WP @ 1.5 gram/liter water at 10-12 days interval for 2 times.
Foot Rot Disease
- Disease resistant varieties like Taichung, Khumal-1 should be used since severity is very low in these varieties.
- Use only healthy seed since disease is seed borne.
- Do not select seed from diseased field.
- Maintain field sanitation by removing weeds from bunds and around field.
- Seed treatment with Carbendazim 50% WP @ 3 gram/kg seed is mandatory before nursery establishment.
Bacterial Blight
- Use resistant varieties like Laxmi, Bindeshwori, Janaki, Sabitri, Chaite 2, Chaite 4, Radha-11,12,13, Hardinath-1,2, Sukhha-1,2,3,4.
- Use dry nursery beds instead of wet nursery.
- Maintain drying in the diseased field for some days. Avoid clipping of seedling.
- Do not apply urea fertilizer only but also apply phosphorus & Potassium in balanced amount.
- Seed treatment with bactericides Streptomycin sulphate 9%, or Tetracycline hydrochloride 1% or, Agrimycin-100, @ 0.25 gram/liter before nursery establishment.|
- Spray filtrate mixture of Fresh cow dung mixed at 50 gram/liter water.
- Spray Streptomycin sulphate 9%, Tetracycline hydrochloride 1% @ 0.25 gram/liter in the diseased field.
False Smut
- Infected plant debris and remnants should be removed from field to reduce disease infestation.
- Seed treatment with Catbendazim @ 2 gram/kg seed before nursery establishment.
- Spray Copper Oxychloride @ 2.5 gram/liter or Propiconazole @ 1 ml/liter water during booting stage and milk stage.
- During tillering and before 1 week of tillering spray Hexaconazole @ 1 ml/liter water or Chlorothalonil @ 2 gram/liter to prevent disease.
Khaira Disease of Rice
- Apply only recommended dose of Nitrogen & phosphorus.
- Manage good drainage system in the field.
- Apply 15-20 kg/ha of Zinc Sulphate in the zinc deficit field.
- Spray mixture of 5 kg of Zinc Sulphate and 2.5 kg of Lime in 1000 liters of water per hector after rice transplantation. Repeat at 10-12 days interval according to requirement for 2-3 times.
